What it is for

Turning a PDF into images converts each page into a separate JPG file. It is the reverse of the usual direction, and you reach for it when the destination will not take a PDF, or when you want to treat the content as an image.

Social networks are the clearest example: almost none of them allow posting a PDF, but all of them accept images. The same goes for many editors, presentation templates and web forms that only take photos.

The conversion renders each page at twice its nominal resolution, so the result looks sharp on screen and survives later cropping. Since the process produces one file per page, the download arrives as a ZIP.

Practical tips

  • If you only care about one page, extract it first: converting a hundred-page document to keep a single page produces a hundred images.
  • The resulting JPG is an image, so the text can no longer be selected or searched. Keep the original PDF if you will need that.
  • For pages with a lot of small text, check the result at 100% before accepting it.
