Converting units is one of those operations needed daily that almost nobody remembers beyond a couple of cases. How many centimetres in an inch, what miles per hour come to in kilometres, what 350 degrees Fahrenheit means for the oven.
The problem shows up mostly when handling information from abroad. Recipes come in pounds and ounces, televisions are measured in inches, technical manuals use a different system, and weather forecasts change scale depending on the country.
Temperature works differently from the rest and it is worth knowing why. Length, weight and speed convert by multiplying by a factor, but Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin do not share a zero point, so their formula includes an offset as well.
