What it is for
Lorem Ipsum is garbled Latin used for centuries to fill mockups. Its origin lies in printing, and it survives because it does a job nothing else does as well.
The key is that it means nothing recognisable while looking like normal text: varied word lengths, punctuation, paragraphs with rhythm. That lets you judge typography, line spacing and the shape of a text block without anyone starting to read the content.
Because that is the trouble with filling a layout with real text or a repeated "text goes here": in the first meeting, the conversation ends up circling what the filler says instead of the design, which was what you were reviewing.
